US support for Israeli occupation

The United States has reversed its stance on Israeli settlements, no longer considering them to be illegal. This is a break from international law.

Why has the US taken this decision of considering Israeli settlements legal at this point, and whether this is another nail in the coffin of the so-called deal of the century?
