The UK has been accused of covering up war crimes committed by its troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Documents leaked to British media and an investigation by the BBC is said to show evidence that implicate the troops in killing children, torturing civilians in addition to sexual abuse. However, the soldiers were not prosecuted. This is despite the fact that at least eleven investigators say they had found evidence of widespread abuse occurring especially at a British army base in the Southern Iraqi city of Basra.
The International Criminal Court says it takes the allegations of war crimes very seriously and could open what would be its first investigation into the British military. During the height of war on Iraq and ongoing war in Afghanistan, allegations of war crimes had been cited. However, the British government took no action, raising the question as whether London is hiding other war crimes
