Residents and tourists in the Italian city of Venice braced for another exceptional high tide on Sunday, adding to the woes of a city that has suffered its worst flooding in 50 years.

Workers were seen removing the raised walkway used to escape the high waters as St. Mark's closed because of the increasing water level.

Even the local workers at the Arzana Gondola museum were disrupted with gondolas seen in a flooded workshop.

On Tuesday the tide peaked at 187 cm (6.14 ft) at 10.50 p.m. (2150 GMT), just short of the record 194 cm set in 1966. In normal conditions, tides of 80-90 cm are generally seen as high but manageable.
