A political analyst says the fact that Donald Trump is “denigrating” former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, his potential opponent for the 2020 election, is the president’s modus operandi.
Mark Dankof made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday when asked about Trump who has said "little" Bloomberg would fail if he joined the race.
Bloomberg was positioning himself Friday to enter the crowded race for the Democratic presidential nomination, setting up a potential showdown with fellow septuagenarian Joe Biden as the leading centrist candidate.
Bloomberg, the 77-year-old former three-term mayor of New York, is expected to file paperwork in at least one state declaring himself a 2020 candidate -- although some observers cautioned he may simply be keeping his options open as he flirts with a White House bid.
Dankof said, “I think Micheal Bloomberg’s potential entry into the democratic presidential swing states is an indication that all of the present contenders have extreme liabilities, those liabilities are beginning to show up early before the first party primary.”
“It should be one would think a fairly easy process to find a candidate who would run a very competitive, potentially victorious race against Donald Trump, but thus far the democrats have been floundering the major candidates Biden, (Elizabeth) Warren and (Pete) Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders all have various liabilities of one kind or another.”
He went on to say that “Trump has already begun to denigrate Bloomberg which is basically Trump’s modus operandi.”
"Little Michael will fail," Trump told reporters in a reference to the stature of the 5ft 8in (1.73m) Bloomberg. "He doesn't have the magic to do well.
"There's nobody I'd rather run against than little Michael," Trump added. "He's not going to do well but I think he's going to hurt Biden actually."
