Iran: IAEA should bear full responsibility over inspector incident

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors convenes a special meeting to discuss two issues pertaining to Iran.

One is Iran’s recent move in preventing an IAEA inspector from entering a nuclear site over concerns she was carrying suspicious material.

The US envoy to the nuclear agency said the incident must have consequences for Iran.

Iranian ambassador Kazem Gharibabadi asked the agency to cooperate in investigating the possible wrongful acts of its staff and bear full responsibility, also denying US claims that the inspector was actually detained.

The second issue raised at the IAEA Board meeting concerned questions raised by the agency which the US claimed were about evidence of potential undeclared nuclear material in Iran.

Iran’s ambassador said Tehran was working extensively and constructively with the agency, adding that neither the agency nor any of the member states are in a position to make confidential safeguards related issues public.

Gharibabadi said it would be wise to avoid aggrandizing issues that can be settled through routine and normal interactions.

The IAEA Board of Governors will meet again in about two weeks time for a regular session during which the acting director general is expected to provide the board with updates on Iran’s declarations and implementation of the JCPOA.
