Former 2016 Green Party presidential Jill Stein has lashed out at Hillary Clinton for suggesting that she is a foreign spy.
"I am not a Russian spy," she told CNN on Saturday, further defending Tulsi Gabbard, a 2020 Democratic hopeful facing similar accusations from Clinton.
"I think this is a completely unhinged conspiracy theory for which there is absolutely no basis in fact, not for myself and not for Tulsi Gabbard. I think it's really outrageous that Hillary Clinton is trying to promote this crazy idea."
The former first lady and New York senator called Stein a "Russian asset" and Gabbard the "favorite of the Russians” for the 2020 election on a podcast Thursday
She further suggested that Clinton was to blame for the victory of Donald Trump, the current president, saying her attack shows “Hillary's need to try to explain, perhaps to herself, why her campaign was not successful."
"People really wanted change and unfortunately believed Donald Trump's lies that he was going to bring change," Stein said.
The president weighed in on the ongoing controversy in a tweet to target his old foe.
"Crooked Hillary Clinton just called the respected environmentalist and Green Party candidate, Jill Stein, a 'Russian Asset.' They need a Green Party more than ever after looking at the Democrats disastrous environmental program!" Trump said.
Gabbard vows to run for Democrats
Gabbard has also responded to Clinton’s comments that she was being "groomed" by Russia.
"Hillary Clinton is labeling me as a foreign agent and a traitor, smearing and undermining my campaign, both directly herself and indirectly through her proxies," Gabbard said in a Friday night interview with CBS News. "The reason why she’s doing this is because she knows that she can’t control me. She knows that she’s not going to be able to manipulate me if I’m elected president to be able to continue these warmongering policies that she has championed."
The Hawaii Democrat, who is a veteran, further undermined the former secretary of state’s foreign policy.
"This is a message to every veteran in this country who has put their life on the line to serve our country, to every single American who believes strongly that we must end this long-standing foreign policy of being the world's police and waging these regime-change wars, which is really the legacy of Hillary Clinton, then we are traitors to the nation that we love," said Gabbard. "This is despicable on so many levels."
The congresswoman also vowed to run for the Democratic Party rather than a third party as Clinton had suggested.
"I've been very clear. I will not be leaving the Democratic Party. I will not be running as an independent or a third-party candidate," she said. "I am running as a Democrat to take our party back, away from the control of people like Hillary Clinton and the warmongering and corrupt, powerful establishment and return our party into the hands of the people."
