Yemen's Ansarullah to free 350 captives, including three Saudis

Hours after the announcement of their major operation deep inside the Saudi territory, officials from the popular Ansarallah movement announced the release of hundreds of militiamen captured during retaliatory military operations against Saudi Arabia. The move was in compliance with last year’s Sweden agreement.

The UN special envoy hailed Ansarullah’s initiative to release the Saudi-led mercenaries. Martin Griffiths said he hopes the move would lead to further progress on an agreed prisoner exchange deal between the warring sides. Earlier, the Yemeni army spokesman released in a presser a video that showed the capture of 2000 Saudi forces in unprecedented operation since the beginning of Ansarullah’s retaliatory attacks deep inside Saudi Arabia.

The spokesman says the ground operations that help Yemenis take control of a large area do not violate the previously-declared cessation of drone and missile attack on Saudi targets. Yemenis say this could be Saudi Arabia’s last chance to stop its aggression and let the Yemenis run their own affairs.

Earlier this month, Saudi war planes bombed this detention center in Dhamar. 120 inmates who fought in the Saudi-led coalition were killed in the attack. Reports said Saudi Arabia deliberately targeted its own forces, who had been captured by the Yemeni army. Those who survived the attack were released today.

The release of the Saudi mercenaries was another gesture of good will by Yemen’s Ansarullah group; after their previous initiative to halt drone and missile attacks on Saudi targets. Many hope Riyadh will follow suit and stop the aggression and allow the Yemeni factions resolve their differences peacefully.
