The United States has rejected a request by Iranian FM Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit Iran's United Nations ambassador in a New York hospital. The US said Zarif's request would be granted if Tehran released an American citizen detained in Iran on security charges.

In July, the US imposed tight travel restrictions on Zarif and Iranian diplomats and their families living in New York. Ambassador Ravanchi 'is being treated for cancer' in a hospital not far away from the UN.

Ravanchi is a vocal critic of US sanctions against the Iranian people and since his arrival in NY, he has given many interviews to US media criticizing Washington's 'economic war' against Iran.
