The US believes it can dictate how sovereign states conduct bilateral relations, and bully other nations into submission, says a political analyst in California.
US President Donald Trump “believes that the US has the inalienable right to push its own agenda onto others and force them to abide by it,” said Dennis Etler, a former professor of Anthropology at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California.
“The US under Trump, his predecessors and presumably his successors, believes it has the sovereign right to interfere in other nations affairs with impunity, while it will brook no interference in its own,” Etler told Press TV.
“Not only that, it will impose its own laws beyond its jurisdiction and force others to abide by its secondary economic sanctions, counter to all international norms,” he added.
China's foreign ministry has criticized sanctions imposed by the United States on specific Chinese entities and people, which the US accuses of knowingly transferring oil from Iran in violation of Washington's illegal embargo on Tehran.
"We always oppose the so-called long-arm jurisdiction and unilateral sanctions," China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Thursday. "We also oppose the bullying practice of the US."
China's cooperation with Iran is legitimate and legal and should be respected and protected, Geng said.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Wednesday that his country is slapping sanctions on five Chinese nationals and six entities, including two COSCO Shipping Corporation subsidiaries.
He warned countries of the risks of breaching sanctions against Iran.
The Trump administration has accused Iran of being behind attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities on September 14 without offering any evidence.
Trump threatened to tighten economic sanctions against Tehran during his address at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“The US attempt to bully other nations into submission will, however, be met with defeat” Etler said.
“China has resolutely said that it will negotiate with the US only after the US removes unreasonable restrictions and Iran has declared that it will not negotiate with the US while its unilateral sanctions remain in place,” he noted.
