The British embassy in Spain is set to be overwhelmed by demands for help by British expats in the event of a no-deal Brexit according to the leaked British government documents code-named the Yellowhammer.

The Yellowhammer documents have suggested Gibraltar is underprepared for Britain leaving the European Union without a deal on trade and travel.

The papers claim that the imposition of checks at Gibraltar border with Spain will disrupt the supply of goods, including food, medicine and the shipment of waste.

It's now obvious that Brexit will impact all parts of British territory. Yet here in Gibraltar we have Spain literally within walking distance. Many Gibraltarians and Spaniards cross back and forth every day.

Gibraltar’s chief minister, Fabian Picardo claimed preparations for possible disruptions of a no-deal Brexit scenario are well underway and that the UK Government has taken steps to avoid the worst-case scenario from ever becoming a reality. Yet, it remains obvious that locals remain deeply concerned.

Only 4% of Gibraltarians voted to leave the European Union making Gibraltar the biggest remain voters out of all the regions under British control. So it's clear that the majority of Gibraltarians did not want Brexit, let alone a hard or no-deal Brexit.

How will the possibility of the latter effect Gibraltarians and the 15,000 Spaniards who cross the border from Spain each day remains uncertain. But what is clear is that locals are concerned.
