Shooting leaves 3 dead, 4 injured in New Mexico

A shooting at a house party in New Mexico has left three people dead and four others injured, authorities say.

The incident happened on Sunday morning in the city of Hobbs, which is located in Lea County, in the southeast corner of the state near the Texas border.

Khalil Carter, 18, of Hobbs; Kristal Avena, 24, of Hobbs, and Lamar Lee Kane Jr., 22, of Washington, D.C. were found dead, while four others aged 20-23 were taken to hospitals for treatment, police said.

The suspect has been arrested and identified as 19-year-old Bishop Henderson. He has been charged with aggravated battery.

"There is a possibility of additional charges in this case as it is still a very active investigation," said the police department in a news release, noting the investigation was still underway.

The United States loses around 33,000 people to gun violence every year. Additionally, more than 100,000 people are shot each year in the country at a total cost of $45 billion, according to a study published in the journal Health Affairs.

Gun violence has grown into a major "human rights crisis" in the United States, Amnesty warns.

According to the international human rights organization, an average of 106 individuals died a day from firearm-related incidents in 2016, totaling 38,658. Of that figure, nearly 23,000 were suicides and more than 14,400 were homicides, Amnesty said.

The issue of gun violence has become all the more polarizing under President Donald Trump, a Republican whose presidential campaign was funded partially by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Trump has been reluctant to address the growing issue in his speeches and following several high-profile mass shootings in the country.
