It was 73rd independence day of Pakistan. On August 14, 1947 Pakistan came into being in the name of creating an Islamic state after the united India was divided into two states by colonial Britain.

This year’s independence day was officially dedicated to over seven-decade-long struggle of 14 million people in disputed Jammu and Kashmir for independence.

Big rallies like this one were held all over the country from southwestern Baluchistan province to the northwestern region, capital Islamabad and Pakistani administered Kashmir.

The participants vowed to help peoples in other part of Kashmir which has been under curfew since August 5 when New Delhi annexed the UN mandated disputed territory into its federal union.

India has suspended internet and phone services and has cut off disputed Kashmir region from rest of the world after deploying nearly 900,000 military and paramilitary troops.

On the eve of independence day, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed the legislative assembly of Kashmir under the administrative control of Pakistan. Kashmir is ruled in parts by Pakistan and India and claimed in full by both nuclear armed nations.

Pakistan shot down two Indian fighter jets and captured one of the pilot in retaliation to its failed airstrikes in February this year. Kashmir is a source of three wars between two nuclear armed nations.

India says the disputed Kashmir is its integral part and New Delhi has vowed to stop of what it calls interference into its internal affairs from neighbour Pakistan

President of Pakistan Arif Alvi has called on the international community to play its role to get numerous UN Security council resolutions implemented and let the people in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir decide on whether they want to stay with India or join Pakistan. He expressed concerns that any shortcoming by the world leaders could lead to the spillover effects of a possible war on the region.
