Formula 1: Hamilton wins German Grand Prix pole

@AFP

Lewis Hamilton has put Mercedes on pole position for their 200th race at the German Grand Prix.

The defending five-time world champion clocked a best lap of one minute 11.767 seconds on Saturday. The Briton outpaced Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 0.346 seconds to secure a record-extending 87th pole of his career.

Starting in the third slot, will be Hamilton's team mate Valtteri Bottas, who finished 0.016 seconds behind Verstappen.

Meanwhile, Ferrari's hopes of seizing the top slot were dashed by engine problems.

Sebastian Vettel lines up last after a turbo-related problem meant he failed to set a time while his team mate Charles Leclerc was sidelined in the final phase with a fuel system issue and starts 10th.
