Scuffles broke out between police and lawyers who took to the streets of Algiers to demand independence for the judiciary.

The lawyers were joined by protesters angry at the government's decision to ban Berber minority flags more than two weeks ago.

''Today, as you can see, lawyers are demonstrating in the capital, Oran and Annaba, to attract attention to people's rights and the need to protect rights and basic freedoms - the rights and freedoms that we will never give away'', said lawyer S. Tamat.

Lawyers demanded the release of protesters who were recently arrested for bringing Berber flags to anti-government demonstrations.
