Post delivered by barge to residents by canalway

The season for post deliveries by barge has opened in Spreewald, Germany. Many houses of Lehde have no direct connection to the road so they receive their letters by barge.

With lots of letters to deliver, Andrea Bunar loads the post barge with boxes and sets off from Lubbenau. Every week Bunar delivers around 600 letters and around 70 packages weighing up to 31.5 kilograms. No matter whether it is a flat screen, a garden swing or a book, Bruner delivers everything.

By delivering the post by barge, Deutsche Post saves around 350 kilograms of CO2 emissions per season - just pure muscle power!

The post barge has been operating on this canal for more than 120 years. Bunar explains, "many homesteads can only be reached by boat. And with the post barge, it is a simple and fast way of delivery."

At the end of the 1890s, the inhabitants of Lehde had to collect their mail on Sundays when they went to church. With industrialization and the migration of a lot of peoples into the cities, the number of letters started to pile up - being the main form of communication. In 1897, the Post decided to deliver items directly to people's homes by a post barge.
