Brazil have booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Copa America after thrashing Group A rivals Peru 5-nil in Sao Paulo.
Backed by the home crowd at the Arena Corinthians, the Selecao opened their scoring frenzy as early as the 12th minute, when Casemiro headed the ball home from inside the 6-yard box.
Firmino made it 2-nil seven minutes later, after the Peru keeper made a hash of his kick. Gremio striker Everton scored the third with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box in the 32nd minute.
Brazil Captain Dani Alves then smashed the ball into the roof of the net to make it 4-nil before the hour mark. Finally, Chelsea striker Willian put the icing on the cake with an excellent curling shot in the dying moments of the match.
The hosts will now face one of the best third-placed countries from Group B or C in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Venezuela sealed their spot in the quarterfinals of the event after a 3-1 victory over Bolivia in Belo Horizonte on Saturday.
Venezuela scored after only two minutes, through a darting header by Darwin Machis. The same player scored Venezuela’s second before the hour mark, with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Leonel Justiniano cut the deficit to 2-1 with eight minutes remaining, butt, four minutes later, Josef Martinez secured the victory for Venezuela with a header from close range.
Venezuela finished in second place in Group B, and will play either Paraguay, Qatar or Argentina in the quarterfinals.
