Stuttgart Open: Auger-Aliassime reaches second round

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime has eliminated Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in the first round of the Stuttgart Open.

The 18- year- old Canadian, who played his first ATP Tour match on grass, broke serve once in each set for a 7-5, 6-3 victory over his Latvian rival.

He needed 86 minutes to register his 21st win of the season. The Canadian youngster will next play Frenchman Gilles Simon for a place in the third round.

Meanwhile, Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff reached the second round of the Stuttgart Open, after a straight sets victory over Denis Shapovalov.

Struff who had defeated the Canadian in the first round of the Roland Garros two weeks ago, struck 14 aces, wrapping up the 7-5, 6-4 victory in an hour and 25 minutes.

It was Struff's third win over Shapovalov since April, and he will meet Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic in the next round.
