Thousands protest in Morocco demanding release of jailed activists

Protesters took to the streets of Rabat on Sunday, to express their anger at a court’s decision to uphold prison sentences imposed on dozens of anti-poverty activists from the Hirak Rif mass protests of 2016 and 2017.

On April 5, a court upheld prison sentences for the activists, with Hirak leader Nasser Zefzafi receiving a 20-year jail term for endangering state security. The appeals court confirmed the sentencing, reportedly saying there was no fresh evidence to consider.

The Hirak Rif protests were galvanised by the death of a fishmonger who was crushed in a rubbish bin after trying to retrieve stocks confiscated by police in 2016.

The movement then grew into a series of demonstrations in which protesters demanded more development in the Rif region in Morocco’s north, and an end to alleged government corruption.
