Is Sudan set to embrace life after Omar Al-Bashir?

For months, thousands of protesters have been filling the streets of Sudan fed up of worsening economic conditions and quality of life. They demanded regime change and have managed to oust Omar Al-Bashir, who’s been ruling Sudan for 30 years.

The transitional military council that has been set up to respond to the protests has helped to bring an end to the rule of President Al-Bashir. It has restructured the joint forces command and appointed a new chief of staff for the army and a deputy. The council has removed several senior figures from their posts such as the defense minister and the ambassadors to Switzerland and the US. The head of the intelligence and security service has also been replaced.

The African Union (AU) have called for Sudan’s military to transfer power to a "transitional civilian-led political authority" within 15 days or face suspension from the AU. Representatives of the main group that is leading the protests, the Sudanese Professionals’ Association, have renewed their call, in line with the recent AU announcement; for the transitional military council to be disbanded and for a new interim civilian ruling council to be formed.

The concern seems to be that the military will still be in control, even if Al-Bashir isn’t at the helm.
