Reports have surfaced that Saudi Arabia is funding an offensive by a military general in Libya.
Earlier this month, forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar stunned the international community. They marched from the East towards Tripoli; after an order was given by Haftar to seize the capital. According to the Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia gave Haftar, a former CIA asset, tens of millions of dollars.
Citing senior advisors to the Saudi monarchy, the offer was made during a visit by Haftar to the Kingdom ahead of his military operation. The money, which Haftar is reported to have accepted, was meant to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders, recruit militants and other military purposes.
