Is this end of Algeria’s president Abdelaziz Bouteflika?

Algeria protest

For weeks, thousands of Algerians have been protesting and calling for the end of president Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s rule.

Elections were scheduled to take place April this year and the ailing 82-year old president has confirmed he will not seek a fifth term. But he has now postponed those elections and reshuffled the government with familiar figures loyal to him. Africa Today asks how Algeria’s government can begin to reflect the will of the people.

The ailing president who has been wheelchair-bound since his stroke in 2013 has promised there will be a transition to new leadership. But as the former interior minister, Bedoui, is considered loyal to President Bouteflika and part of the old guard – something the young protesters aren’t too happy about. Bouteflika has stated that his last duty would be to contribute to the founding of a new system that will be in the hands of a new generation of Algerians.
