Following days of rare nationwide protests against the Algerian Presidents bid to run for a fifth consecutive term; Abdelaziz BOU-TAFRIQA has done just that. However, in a letter read out by his campaign manager, he has offered concessions, should he be re-elected. This is a plan to stay in office for one year. During this time he says a national conference will be set up to discuss constitutional reforms. He will then stand-down and call snap elections. BOU-TAFRIQA has promised NOT to run again after this transition period. The offer has been met with skepticism by Algerian protesters. Following the announcement, they have staged fresh rallies. The demonstrations have been ongoing for more than ten days now. Apart from some sporadic clashes that left scores of people injured, the rallies have remained peaceful. They are however the biggest in 30 years against the current leader of the National Liberation Front, or F-L-N .
