Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani

The leading Iranian politician and cleric Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1934 - 2017) was the fourth president of the Islamic Republic serving from 1989 to 1997.

Rafsanjani played a key role both during anti-Shah struggles before the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and afterwards. He was elected chairman of the Iranian parliament in 1980 and served until 1989. He assumed office as the Chairman of the Expediency Council in 1989. His eight-year presidency is popularly known as the construction period. Here is a short review of some major projects during his presidency.
