A professional black football player in England has criticized UK newspapers for their portrayal of young black footballers, saying they deliberately “fuel racism”.
Raheem Sterling, an England national team player and member of the top league club Manchester City, posted comments on his Instagram page on Sunday, saying newspapers in Britain were a major instigator of racial hatred in the country.
Sterling included images in his post showing two newspaper articles about two teammates, one black and one white, who had bought homes this year. The City player said the two articles adopted different views to the same story only because of the color of their skin.
One article reportedly said Tosin Adarabioyo, who is black, spent 2.25 million pounds on a house despite having never started a match in the English Premier League, but the other hailed Phil Foden for buying the two-million-pound house out of pure affection “for his mum”.
“I think this is unacceptable, both innocent, have not done a thing wrong but just by the way it has been worded, this young black kid is looked at in a bad light, which helps fuel racism and aggressive behavior,” wrote Sterling in his post.
The comments came a day after Sterling was allegedly subject to racial abuse by a supporter during a match between Manchester City and Chelsea in London, which ended with a 2-0 loss for Sterling’s side.
The police in the capital said it was investigating the alleged racial abuse and will review films to see whether the incident really took place.
The incident also comes a week after Emmanuel Adebayor, a Togolese who plays for Arsenal, was insulted because of his skin color when a fan threw a banana skin at him during a match against Tottenham Hotspur in London.
