Greek police clashed with young protesters in central Athens on Saturday, November 17, after thousands marched to mark the anniversary of a violently quashed student uprising in 1973 that helped topple the military junta.

After the march ended, protesters hurled stones, petrol bombs and firecrackers at police outside the Polytechnic, where dozens died 45 years ago.

Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades as other protesters built street barricades with desks and chairs. A water canon was deployed to disperse the crowd. Police took at least two protesters into custody.
