State of Palestine: Gazans celebrate Lieberman's resignation

Gazans gather outside the home of top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Wednesday to celebrate the resignation of Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Lieberman, a proponent of strong military action against Hamas, announced his resignation in protest of the Egypt-brokered ceasefire reached with Hamas in Gaza after the worst outbreak of violence since 2014.

Lieberman also said his party was quitting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition, leaving the premier with only a one-seat majority in parliament. Elections are not due until November 2019, but Lieberman's resignation increases the likelihood of an earlier vote.

The tense ceasefire between Israel and Gaza had already been put under pressure when a fisherman from Gaza was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Wednesday, after the ceasefire had begun.
