12mn Yemenis may face worst famine in 100 years

The citizens of war torn Yemeni are on the verge of the worst famine in 100 years. And it’s all because of a war they didn’t start and cannot win.

Two in five of the Yemeni population, amounting to millions of people, face starvation due to the escalating conflict and a deepening economic crisis, according to the World Food Program, which warns that an additional 3.5 million Yemenis urgently need regular food aid to protect them from famine-like conditions.

The Saudi-led coalition has been attacking many targets in Yemen. One of the principle victims of these strikes is Yemen’s Hudaydah port, where the World Food Program is finding it hard or impossible to access desperately needed wheat stocks. Yemen is heavily dependent on food important and these deadly ground and aerial attacks by the Riyadh regime and its allies are directly adding to the risk of starvation on a massive scale.

The World Food Program is doing its best, under challenging circumstances, to increase emergency food aid to Yemenis. As the war rages on and the economic situation deteriorates, it is feared millions are struggling to survive in the poorest Arab country. The UN’s food agency has urged Saudi Arabia and its allies to stop their devastating war on Yemen, as millions face the very real risk of starvation.
