US President Donald Trump has reiterated support for his nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court, denouncing sexual misconduct allegations against the judge as a “con game” being played by the Democrats.

Trump made the comment in defense of his Supreme Court pick on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

“I think it’s horrible what the Democrats have done. It’s a con game they’re playing, they’re really con artists. They don't believe it themselves, they know he's a high-quality person, it's just resist and obstruct, they're playing a con game and they play it very well," Trump said.

"They know he's high quality and they wink at each other, they're winking and they know it’s a con game," he added.

Kavanaugh stands accused of sexually assaulting Christine Blasey Ford during a violent encounter at a drunken party back in the 1980s. Kavanaugh and Ford are scheduled to testify in front of the Senate panel on Thursday.

Kavanaugh is also facing similar accusations from Deborah Ramirez, who charges the top judge once exposed himself to her at a drunken dormitory party and forced her to touch his genitals in the 1983-84 academic school year, when he was a freshman at Yale University.

He has firmly denied claims by both Ford and Ramirez, expressing his readiness to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee to save his reputation. Ramirez came forward when a number of witnesses cited by Ford refuted her claims.

Rejecting the accusations against Kavanaugh, the US president said Tuesday the claims were "totally unsubstantiated" and scoffed about the fact that they are more than 30 years old.

Casting doubt on Ramirez's account of her encounter with Kavanaugh, Trump said her story had "gaps" and that she "has nothing," also claiming that the 53-year-old accuser was "totally inebriated" and "all messed up."

Trump’s remarks come at a time when his pick for the Supreme Court has come under more pressure to withdraw as a third woman is going to accuse him of sexual assault.

The new accuser was said to be “100 percent credible,’’ and that she had multiple witnesses to support her story. The unnamed woman has reportedly said that she will be willing to take a polygraph if Kavanaugh agrees to do so as well.

Kavanaugh and his Republican allies have labeled the allegations as part of a “smear campaign” by Democrats who have opposed his nomination from the beginning.

The US Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled for Friday to hold a preliminary vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination of Supreme Court. If Kavanaugh gets the committee's nod, the controversial pick would then be put to a vote in the full Senate.
