A new opinion poll shows that about half of Americans tend to vote for Democrats rather than Republicans in the upcoming midterm congressional elections in November.

The survey conducted and released by USA Today/Suffolk University on Tuesday found that 50 percent of registered voters would support Democratic congressional candidates in their district, while 39 percent said they preferred Republicans.

Another 58 percent of respondents said in the same poll that they sought to elect Congress members who would stand up to US President Donald Trump, whereas only a third of voters favored to see the legislative branch cooperate with the White House.

As for the US president’s approval rating, only 40 percent of those surveyed said they were satisfied with the way Trump was doing his job at the White House. Fifty-six percent said they disapproved of his performance.

The poll was conducted among 1,000 registered voters between August 23 and August 28 with a margin of error of 3 percent.

In a survey carried out by ABC News/Washington Post on Friday, Trump’s disapproval rating hit an all-time high, with 60 percent of Americans being dissatisfied with the businessman-turned-politician’s performance in office.

Fifty-three percent of the figure, as the poll said, included those who “strongly” disapproved of Trump’s performance in the White House.

Last week, Trump warned of “violence” if Republican Party lawmakers lost their majority in Congress after the November midterm elections.

At a dinner for evangelical Christian preachers at the White House on Monday, the US president urged religious leaders to use the power of their pulpits to make sure that “all of your people vote” in November.

“You’re one election away from losing everything you’ve got,” Trump reportedly said at the meeting. “They will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently. And violently. There’s violence."

The next elections in the US are to be held on November 6, 2018. Americans are to vote for members of the House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 Senate seats.
