Eight people remain missing after a ship capsized on Sunday off the coast of Tangshan in north China's Hebei Province, local authorities said on Monday.

The maritime search and rescue center in Hebei received reports of a distress call at 06:47 Sunday, saying that 12 people fell overboard when the vessel capsized.

Four people were rescued from the water but eight are still missing, the center confirmed.

Helicopters, ships, and divers are assisting with the search and rescue operation, which is still ongoing across a large search area, according to personnel at the maritime search and rescue center.

"We did some calculations, and pinpointed the dot as the center of the circle after taking the water currents into consideration.

Helicopters and drones have been sent to this 1,600-square-kilometer rectangular area to search for the missing crew.

This region is currently under maritime traffic control," said Wang Deliang, a staff member from of the center, as he showed a reporter the search area.
