The Iran men’s national under-20 volleyball team has maintained its brilliant performance at the 2018 Asian Men's U20 Volleyball Championship, routing the Indian side for a place in the quarterfinal round.
On Wednesday, the Iranian squad defeated India in straight sets (25-17, 25-14 and 25-22) in a round of 16 fixture in the Bahraini capital city of Manama.
Pourya Yali led Iran with 20 points, while Sujoy Datta was the high-scorer for India with seven points.
“India even played much better than yesterday. India has always been a challenge for Iran. Right now, they have some internal problems in their federations; otherwise, they can be one of the strongest teams to be reckoned with in Asia. Today, their receptions were not at their best and we also put pressure on them with impeccable serves,” Iran’s head coach Behrouz Ataei commented after the match.
“In the opening of the first set, we did not take India seriously since it was our first morning match and we could not adapt to the time. After the 13th point, we came back on our right track,” Yali said.
The Iran men’s national under-20 volleyball team will take on Kazakhstan in its next fixture on Thursday.
The 2018 Asian Men's U20 Volleyball Championship started on July 21, and will run through July 28, 2018.
The top two teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship as Asian representatives.
