Most Americans think immigration is good for their country, a new poll has found, amid controversy over President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies.

The Gallup poll found that 75 percent of Americans thought the inflow of immigrants was a “good thing” in general, the highest figure recorded since 2001.

The figure reached 84 percent when the respondents were specifically asked about “legal immigration.”

Of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters, 85 percent viewed immigration positively, compared with 65 percent of Republicans and those who lean Republican.

Meanwhile, support for curbing immigration dropped to its lowest level in over half a century as only 29 percent of Americans thought it needed to be decreased, the smallest number recorded in a Gallup poll since 1965.

The poll returned similar results to a slew of recent immigration surveys that have mostly shown an opposition among American voters to Trump’s hard-line approach to immigration enforcement.

The president’s “no mercy” immigration policy took a hit earlier his week after he was forced to sign an executive order to end separating immigrant families at the border. This means the families will be detained at the border together for an indefinite period.

“Americans’ strong belief that immigration is a good thing for the country and that immigration levels shouldn’t be decreased present the president and Congress with some tough decisions as the midterm elections loom,” Gallup said Thursday.

The poll also indicated that 14 percent Americans thought immigration was the top problem facing the country, a rise from 10 percent last month.

This makes immigration a key issue in the upcoming midterm congressional elections, where Republicans and Democrats will try their best to win more seats at the Senate and the House of Representatives, both dominated by Republicans.
