Trump aides don’t trust him to make deal with North Korea: Analyst

James Jatras, political analyst

US President Donald Trump does not have the full support of his administration when it comes to making peace with North Korea, with many of Trump's aides seeking to “sabotage” a potential deal, says an American political analyst.

James Jatras, a former US Senate foreign policy analyst, made the remarks while discussing doubts over Trump's scheduled meeting with North Korean Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12.

Trump said during a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the White House on Tuesday that there was a "very substantial" chance the summit was not going to happen.

“We’re moving along. We’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters. “There are certain conditions we want to happen. I think we’ll get those conditions. And if we don’t, we won’t have the meeting.”

The comments came after Pyongyang threatened last week that it would scrap the historic meeting unless the US quits making unrealistic demands.

North Korea says it is angry about a large military exercise called Max Thunder that's currently being staged by Washington and Seoul in South Korea.

North Korea has called the drills an "undisguised challenge" and a "deliberate military provocation" against the apparent strides toward peace.

Pyongyang has also been outraged by US proposals for a disarmament model similar to the one Libya was offered in 2003.

"There are many people around President Trump who do not want this meeting to take place at all and they are working I think to sabotage it," Jatras told Press TV on Wednesday.

These elements are trying to produce a long list of demands that they are sure will prompted a negative answer from Pyongyang, the analyst added.

Jatras said Trump was eager to cut some sort of a deal with the North but there were certain people within the US establishment who "do not trust him to make decision on behalf of this country."
