The Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for a deadly knife attack in Paris in which one person was killed and at least four more were injured.

Referring the attacker as a "soldier" of the ISIL in a statement released via the Takfiri group's propaganda agency, Daesh claimed that the incident was in response to bombing of its positions in Syria and Iraq.

According to security sources, the attack happened close to the city's main opera house in an area full of bars and restaurants.

The assailant attacked five people with a knife, killing one and injuring four more, two of whom are in critical condition.

He added that the attacker was killed by police after they arrived at the scene.

Following the incident, French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that his country "once again pays the price of blood" but stressed that France would "yield not an inch to the enemies of freedom." "I salute on behalf of all French people the courage of the police officers who neutralized the terrorist," he added.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said the assault was being investigated as a terrorist attack.

"I was on the cafe terrace, I heard three, four shots, it happened very fast," said 47-year-old Gloria, who was close the attack when it took place.

"Then the bartenders told us to come inside very quickly. Then I went out to see what was going on, and then I saw a man on the ground," she added.

The killing comes as France is under a constant threat of terrorism. A string of Takfiri attacks have claimed the lives of over 245 people around France in the past three years.

Nearly 120 people were killed on November 13, 2015 after being held hostage by gunmen at the Bataclan concert hall in central Paris. Scores of people were reportedly killed in other attacks across Paris, for which the Takfiri group of Daesh claimed responsibility.

During the Paris attacks in 2015, Daesh-affiliated terrorists used guns and explosive vests to strike almost simultaneously a concert hall, a major stadium, and restaurants and bars, injuring hundreds in addition to those killed.
