Palestine: Tensions flare on ‘March of Return’ protests
Tensions flared at Gaza border on Friday, as the ‘March of Return' protests entered their fifth consecutive week.
Palestinian protesters set fire to tyres and threw stones towards border guards. Israeli regime forces responded with live ammunition and volleys of tear gas. The Gazan health ministry said that over 600 people were wounded on Friday.
Since the protests began three weeks ago, 42 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, according to the United Nations Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Israel does not release figures and rejects suggestions that it uses excessive force.
The six-week long 'Great March' will continue until May 15, the 'Nakba' (Catastrophe), which marks the expulsion and displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Protesters are demanding a right of return to land which is now claimed by Israel.
