China denounces US over human rights

China has denounced the United States for hypocrisy and its own rights issues in its annual rebuttal to criticism from Washington about Beijing’s human rights record.

In the annual Chinese response to a recent report by the US State Department, China’s State Council, or Cabinet, said on Tuesday that the US posed once again as "the guardian of human rights" and a self-styled "human rights judge" while its own human rights record remained tarnished.

"It seems that in this world only the United States' human rights situation is perfect," it said, adding, "Looking back on 2017, those with even the slightest sense of justice can see that the United States' own human rights record is, as usual, notorious for its misdeeds, and continues to worsen."

The Chinese report, titled "Human Rights Record of the United States in 2017," came after acting US Secretary of State John Sullivan released the report on Human Rights Practices on April 20. He accused several countries of violating human rights within their borders on a daily basis, labeling them as forces of instability.

According to the report, African Americans are seven times more likely to be mistakenly jailed for murder, and violent crime keeps rising.

It also took aim at what the report described as "serious abuses in the US style of democracy."

"US money politics keeps fermenting, and the rich guide the direction of politics. The weak face increasingly harsh restrictions on voting, and scandals involving politicians are frequent."

Human rights have long been a source of tension between the world's two largest economies. China routinely rejects criticism of its rights record and has pointed to its success at lifting millions out of poverty.

In February, Amnesty International accused US President Donald Trump of violating human rights by adopting “hateful” politics.

"President Trump takes actions that violate human rights at home and abroad," the UK-based group said in its annual report, The State of the World’s Human Rights.
