15,000 Spanish pro-unity supporters demonstrate in Barcelona against the secessionist movement in Catalonia, Catalan urban police said.
The protest was organised by the "Platform for Tabarnia', a counter-independence movement prompted mainly by social media which calls for an independent region made up of the Catalan cities of Tarragona and Barcelona. "Tabarnia" is a play on words of Tarragona and Barcelona and the area would seek independence from Catalonia but not from Spain.
Under the slogan: "The joke is over. Long live Tabarnia", demonstrators chanted slogans and waved Spanish and Catalan flags as they walked through central streets of Barcelona and finished their protest at Sant Jaume square, in front of the regional government headquarters.
Political uncertainty remains in Catalonia after former leader Carles Puigdemont provisionally withdrew his bid for a second term as president on Thursday, March 1, marking an end to a campaign to re-instate him as leader despite being in self-imposed exile in Belgium.
