Pakistan-US relations at risk over Hafiz Saeed case

Pakistan has announced that it cannot act against Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed without proof. This came amid calls from Washington to arrest and prosecute him. There could be many reasons why Washington is after Saeed. One reason – among many other potential ones – could be an attempt to appease India with which the US has recently been trying to bolster ties. But in light of Islamabad’s defiance, chances are that Saeed’s case, if not deftly handled, might pose a real risk to an already fragile alliance between Pakistan and the US.

Turkey’s undeclared motives in Afrin operation

Turkey continues its military operations in northern Syria without permission from the Arab country’s government. The operation, ironically codenamed Olive Branch, has been strongly condemned by the Syrian president. Bashar al-Assad said Turkey’s intervention is part of Ankara's bid to help armed groups fighting to topple the Syrian government. Turkey says its operation is aimed at pushing back Syria’s Kurdish forces known as YPG from border areas. But some observers do not buy Ankara’s claim that it’s only chasing the Kurdish forces. They believe Turkey might have other motives.
