Iranian ice climber Mohammad Reza Safdarian has managed to collect a bronze medal at the 2018 Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Tour in Switzerland.

Safdarian participated in the men’s lead contests on the final day of the competitions in the ski-resort village of Saas-Fee, and landed in the third place.

Russian contestant Alexey Dengin ranked first and was awarded the gold medal.

Maxim Tomilov, another representative from Russia, finished runner-up and claimed silver.

The 2018 UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour started on January 19, and finished the next day.

The tournament brought together some 300 athletes from more than 20 countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States.

It was held in men’s lead, women’s lead, men’s speed and women’s speed sections.

Lead climbing, on the other hand, emphasizes on strength and techniques. Climbers go up the ice alone and try to reach a specific end point within a given amount of time.

To practice the sport at the highest level of competition, it takes athletes with strategic insight, power, precision and full commitment.

Speed climbing is a race in its purest form. Two contestants face each other while moving up the ice in this disciple, and the faster climber wins.
