Syria’s top parliamentarian says Jerusalem al-Quds belongs to the Islamic world, stressing that Muslims will exercise their right to stand against the Israeli regime’s occupation of the ancient city.

The Speaker of People's Council of Syria Hammouda Youssef Sabbagh made the remarks in an address to the 13th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

Muslims will make endeavors to redeem al-Quds as it is their right to do so, he said, adding that “the cancerous tumor of Israel” should be removed.

The top Syrian lawmaker also said terrorists have joined forces against Syria and Palestine due to their support for the anti-Israel resistance front, adding, however, that their attempts will fail.

Last month, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington was recognizing Jerusalem al-Quds as the “capital” of Israel and would soon relocate the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. The announcement drew widespread condemnation and stirred protests against the US and Israel.

The United Nations General Assembly voted by a resounding majority to reject Trump’s Jerusalem al-Quds move.

Israel lays claim to the whole Jerusalem al-Quds, but the international community views the ancient city’s eastern sector as occupied land and Palestinians consider it as the capital of their future state.

Elsewhere in his address, the parliament speaker warned that terrorists are targeting the Syrian nation’s resistance and seek to replace its dignified peace with a “humiliating” one, but that the holy religion of Islam is against such a peace.

Syria will remain alive until it can guarantee the fundamental rights of its people, whether Muslims or Christians, he pointed out.

The official further called on the OIC member states to pass resolutions that foster a campaign against terrorism and show that true Islam is opposed to the scourge.

He referred to Syria’s alliance with Iran and other partners, saying it has helped the Arab country make many achievements in its fight against terrorism.

Sabbagh hailed the Islamic Republic’s resistance against oppression and terrorism, and expressed gratitude to the Iranian Leadership, government, parliament and nation for standing by Syria.

Parliament speakers, deputy parliament speakers, and parliamentary delegations from 44 countries attended the Tehran event. The conference kicked off on Saturday and will wrap up later today.
