The United States and Israel reject peace and support endless conflict in the Middle East because peace would defeat their imperial agenda, says Stephen Lendman, a journalist and political analyst based in Chicago.
Lendman made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday after Trump reportedly told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of his intention to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.
Abbas "warned of the dangerous consequences of such a decision on the peace process, security and stability in the region and the world.”
Lendman told Press TV on Tuesday that Trump “is getting information. He is getting advice. Either way he is getting an awful lot of flak from the Muslim world, especially the Arab world, explaining that if he does this you might as well kiss the peace process good bye.”
“I mean it’s moribund anyway. It’s dead on arrival every time it begins. But he is making a try to do what no US administration has ever before accomplished. Well, neither will he because his idea of peace isn’t peace. It’s giving Israel everything it wants and it’s giving nothing to Palestinians,” the journalist added.
“It isn’t a peace plan at all. It’s a no-peace peace plan. It’s accepting Palestine, Palestinian self-determination under isolated Bantustan with Israel controlling the territory with no sovereignty, with Israel controlling and having exclusive rights to Palestinian resources, no right of return, no east Jerusalem as Israeli’s capital,” Lendman stated.
The entire Jerusalem al-Quds is currently under Israel’s control, while the Israeli regime also claims the city’s eastern part, which hosts the third holiest Muslim site.
The city has been designated as “occupied” under international law since the 1967 Arab War, which Palestinians want as the capital of their future state.
Trump is expected declaration of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s “capital” has drawn opposition from various countries and international bodies, including Turkey and the European Union (EU).
“If Trump recognizes Jerusalem, the peace process is absolutely gone,” Lendman said.
“He made a big point during his campaign that he wanted to achieve something no US administration had ever managed to accomplish and so called efforts for resolving the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict that has been going on for around 40 years,” he stated.
“Well, the reason that there has never been any resolution on it is because Washington and Israel reject peace, and support endless conflict, instability in the Middle East. And the idea of stabilizing things would defeat their imperial agenda,” Lendman noted.
Since the US Congress ruled in 1995 that the embassy be relocated from Tel Aviv, every president has deferred the troublesome measure by issuing a six-month waiver.
When Trump faced his first deadline back in June, he also refused to keep his campaign pledge to immediately move the embassy.
