Iranian karatekas win 9 medals in World Junior, Cadet and U21 Championships 2017

Iranian karate practitioners have shown great punching, knee strikes as well as open-hand techniques at the World Junior, Cadet and U21 Championships 2017 in Spain, and received nine medals, including two gold ones, at the prestigious event.

On Saturday, Avishan Bagheri took part in the women’s kumite minus 55-kigram competitions in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and triumphed over Spanish opponent Marina Cáceres Quiñonero in the final contest, and took the gold.

In the men’s minus 76-kilogram kumite division, Barbod Sedaghat defeated Nabil Ech-Chaabi of Morocco, and stood on top of the podium.

Moreover, Sara Bahmanyar claimed a silver medal in the women’s kumite minus 50-kilogram division.

Majid Nikouhemmat added another silver to Iran’s medal tally in the men’s kumite over 76-kilogram section.

Earlier in the tournament, Haditheh Jamal, Ahmad Reza Mahmoudi, Alireza Faraji and Ghasem Khoubrou could earn four bronze medals in the women’s junior individual kata, women’s cadet individual kata, men’s minus 57-kilogram and men’s minus 61-kilogram classes.

The Iranian women’s kata team, comprised of Yeganeh Shahpari, Golnaz Shahzaydi and Erfaneh Masah, could bag a bronze medal as well.

The 10th edition of World Cadet, Junior and Sub21 Championships kicked off on October 25, and will run through October 25.

The event has brought together 1,710 male and female karate practitioners from 109 countries, who compete in 35 categories.

The tournament also showcases athletes in the quest to the Youth Olympic Games as the World Championship in junior kumite categories is one of the main qualifying events for Buenos Aires 2018.
