Daesh on the back foot in Syria, Iraq

Daesh

These are the headlines we are tracking for you in this episode of On the News Line:

Daesh on the backfoot

Daesh, the most terrifying terrorist group the world has ever seen, seems to be in steep decline. The group emerged in 2014 in Iraq and made lightning advances. It crossed into Syria, seized major parts of Syrian territory and declared a caliphate. It unveiled plans to expand its rule by capturing territory in many regional countries. Pictures of horrifying atrocities committed by Daesh, like mass beheadings in areas under its control, shocked the world. The group was well armed and organized with many regional countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar as well as the United States widely accused of helping form the terrorist group in a bid to oust the Syrian and Iraqi governments. But the terror group’s actions did not go unanswered. Daesh has suffered humiliating blows over the past two years and now seems to be in disarray. Just recently, more than a thousand Daesh terrorists in Iraq surrendered to security forces.

North Korea tension

Tensions appear to be again rising around North Korea after a relative calm that was very short-lived. The driving force of the new wave of tensions?  US President Donald Trump. And it was this Twitter message that had everyone guessing if things were already heading toward a direction feared by the world. Trump’s open declaration that diplomacy no longer works with North Korea has provoked reactions at home and among fellow Republicans. Senator Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has warned that the president’s reckless threats toward other countries could set America on the path to World War Three.
