These are the headlines we are tracking for you in this episode of On the News Line:
US failures on the Rohingya, civilian casualties and hurricane Maria
The United States is mired in a series of crises: The rise of the far-right, almost daily confrontations between police and civil rights protesters, rising gun violence and faltering healthcare system are just some of them. But in the international arena, the US government is facing serious failures. Additional, civilian casualties. According to UN, US-led coalition carried out nearly 1,100 airstrikes on and near Raqqah in August. And it’s civilians who are paying a heavy price for the US air raids.
China cracks down on the Muslim Uyghurs
Crackdown on Muslims…this time not in Myanmar or Indian-controlled Kashmir, but in China…Chinese authorities have ordered Muslim citizens in the country to hand over their prayer mats and copies of the Quran or they will face harsh punishment. A Muslim Uyghurs exile has said to the media: "We received a notification saying that every single ethnic Uyghurs must hand in all Islam-related items from their own home, including Qurans, prayer mats and anything else bearing the symbols of the religion". The directive also applies to ethnic Kazakh and Kyrgyz Muslims. Muslims across the world consider the Quran sacred as it embodies the words of God the almighty revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Almost all governments in the world including those openly stating their enmity toward Islam and Muslims handle the issue carefully.
