Syrian fighter jets have reportedly carried out a string of airstrikes against the positions of foreign-sponsored Takfiri militants in the country’s west-central province of Hama.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Thursday that a series of aerial assaults after midnight hit areas in the militant-held towns of Khan Shaykhun, Kafr Nabl, Kafr Zeita and Ma'arrat al-Nu'man, leaving scores of militants dead or injured.

The airstrikes came as government forces, backed by allied fighters from popular defense groups, have scored a series of territorial gains against foreign-backed terrorists over the past few weeks.

Syrian army forces wrest control over several areas in Day al-Zawr

Elsewhere in the eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr, Syrian army soldiers have established full control over several areas.

Syria’s official news agency, SANA, reported that government forces had expanded their control over the eastern bank of the Euphrates River after eliminating the last pockets of Daesh Takfiri terrorists in the village of Marat and liberating al-Tibni town and al-Bowaitiyah village in the western flank of the province from the grip of extremists.

Local sources, requesting anonymity, also said that scores of Daesh terrorists had fled from al-Basira district following advances by Syrian troops and their allies.

Daesh overran large parts of Dayr al-Zawr province, including its oil fields, in mid-2014 as it seized swathes of land in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

By early 2015, the Takfiri terrorists were in control of some parts of Dayr al-Zawr city and besieged the remaining parts, which were under government control. It is estimated that 100,000 people remain in the government-held parts of the city.

The SOHR estimates that more than 10,000 people might be living in the Daesh-held parts of Dayr al-Zawr.
