Cambodia's anti-US sentiment
The United States and the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia have become locked in a deepening political dispute. The two sides have engaged in heated exchanges after the government of Cambodia shut down an American NGO and told its staff to leave the country. The government in Phnom Penh believes the National Democratic Institute has violated laws on non-governmental organizations and taxes. The closure of the NGO comes as Cambodia is heading for a key general election next year and this has led to speculations that the move was related to the vote.
Tehran-Riyadh rapprochement?
There are signs of a thaw in relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia after a turbulent period which many believed risked pushing the two countries to the brink of a real confrontation. Now the Iranian foreign minister has said the Islamic republic and the Saudi government will soon exchange diplomatic visits. Mohammad Javad Zarif told local media the visits would take place after this year's hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Tehran and Riyadh cut ties last year. Earlier, media reports said Saudi Arabia crown prince Mohammad bin Salman, which is now seen as the de facto king of the Arab monarchy seeks to restore ties with Iran. The timing of Riyadh’s willingness to do so leaves a question mark in the mind of observers.
