Iran losses Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship opener to Chinese Taipei

The opening game of the Iranian women's national volleyball team at the 19th edition of Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in the Philippines has ended in a disappointing loss to Chinese Taipei.

On Wednesday, the Iranian squad began its campaign at the preliminary round of tournament with a 1-3 (15-25, 27-25, 17-25 and 20-25) loss at Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Muntinlupa.

Chinese Taipei volleyball players started the Pool D match in a better fashion, and earned the first point. Iran’s Soudabeh Bagherpour, however, responded well and leveled the score at 1-1.

The Taiwanese sportswomen’s diverse attacks and spikes coupled with Iranians’ poor reception helped the East Asians to close the first set at 25-15.

The Persians did not seem to be capitulating as they came back to the game after the break, and could rack up points to take the second set 27-25.

The Chinese Taipei women's national volleyball team retook the lead in the third set, and won it 25-17.

They maintained the upper hand in the final set, and captured a 25-20 victory.

The 19th edition of Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship opened on August 9 and will finish on August 17, 2017 in the Philippines. Matches are being held at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan and Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Muntinlupa.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is pitted against Chinese Taipei, the Maldives and Thailand in Pool D of the volleyball competitions.

Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and the Philippines are in Pool A.

Pool B consists of Australia, China and Japan. New Zealand, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are drawn in Pool C.

The Iranian team will take on Thailand in its second preliminary round match on Thursday.
