Hiroshima bombing anniversary

Japan is commemorating the seventy-second anniversary of the US military’s deadly atomic bombing of the city of Hiroshima, which still bears the scars of the disaster.

Thousands of people took part in the memorial service, held a minute of silence to remember the dead and made a call to eliminate nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the city mayor also attended the ceremony held at Hiroshima’s memorial park. The Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 1945 claimed the lives of over 192,000 people. Some died immediately while others succumbed to wounds or radiation-related illnesses later. Three days after the incident, the US military dropped another bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing 80,000 people.

Korean Peninsula tensions

The United Nations Security Council has imposed fresh sanctions against North Korea over its missile program. The US has defended the punitive measures but Russia and China blame Washington for the escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Turkey's Syria plans

Turkey’s president has warned that Ankara will soon wage fresh incursions in Syria as the country boosts its military presence along the border.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the new operations will be similar to those conducted in northern Syria last August. The Turkish president has also implied that the war in Syria goes beyond fighting Daesh and may lead to a Kurdish state. Turkey strongly opposes the presence of Kurdish YPG militants in Syria, accusing the group of links with Kurdish militants in Turkey who have committed acts of terrorism. Last year, the country’s armed forces cleared an area in northern Syria from the militants in an operation dubbed the Euphrates Shield. Turkish media are reporting an extensive build-up of military hardware in the border province of Killis.

Attack on US mosque

US investigators have launched a hate crime probe into a bombing that rattled a mosque in the state of Minnesota.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe into the early Saturday morning incident that caused no injuries. Officials say an improvised explosive device was used in the attack at the Dar al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington, south of Minneapolis. The explosion occurred as worshippers were preparing for morning prayers. The attack was quickly condemned by religious leaders and activists.

Macron's woes

After less than 100 days in office, surveys show the popularity of French President Emmanuel Macron plunging to another record low. He has pledged to press on with his controversial changes to the labor code, which may be at the heart of his low approval ratings.

US's Syria airstrikes

Relentless deadly US-led airstrikes on the Syrian city of Raqqah has prompted an outcry from Russia.

Deputy speaker of Russia's parliament, Irina Yarovaya has called on the United Nations to investigate the deadly US attacks. This comes on the heels of an air raid that razed a hospital to the ground in Raqqah. Reports say the US-led warplanes used phosphorus bombs in the attack. Yarovaya says hitting civilian targets raises the suspicion that the attacks are a disguised intention to destroy those who are not terrorists. The US-led aerial raids on the Daesh bastion have left hundreds of civilians dead. The attacks have also infuriated the Syrian government. Damascus has already objected to the UN in a strongly-worded letter.
