US-Russian backed Syria truce destined to fail?  

The ceasefire that was brokered by the United States and Russia last week for South Syria has been largely viewed as a step in the right direction. It revived hopes that peace could eventually return to a country which is caught in a war for multiple years. A war that has claimed the lives of several hundred thousands of people, displaced millions and destroyed the country. The de-escalation agreement for South Syria was also important because it was the first test of friendship between Russia and the United States under Donald Trump. But a look at the previous truce deals in Syria show there are strong reasons to fear this latest agreement to fall through as well.

Afghanistan wants Taliban at negotiating table

Afghanistan’s militancy problem is giving serious headaches to the government of President Ashraf Ghani. The Taliban have seized considerable parts of the country and could take more in the coming weeks and months. Taliban’s resurgence has not only alarmed the Afghan government. US and NATO officials are feeling the heat, too. Both the US military and NATO have announced plans for sending thousands of additional troops to the country to help check Taliban advances. But the Afghan president has apparently come to the conclusion that the Taliban cannot be defeated militarily and have to be brought to the negotiating table.
