Iran volleyball team finishes 5th at FIVB U-21 world championship

Iran’s national under-21 volleyball team has finished well down the list at the 2017 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in the Czech Republic, and claimed the fifth spot at the conclusion of the international tournament.

On Sunday, the Iranian outfit, which had Javad Karimisouchelmae, Rasoul Aghchehli, Amirhossein Esfandiar, Esmaeil Mosaferdashliboroun, Tayeb Einisamarein, Aliasghar Mojarad and Esmaeil Talebi Khameneh in the line-up, subdued the Chinese squad 3-0 (25-19, 25-20 and 25-21) in a classification match for the fifth to eighth places of the competition at DRFG Arena in the southwestern Czech city of Brno.

“Our championship target was to enter the top four. We lost very sadly in five sets against Poland, so our goal was to take the fifth place afterwards. I am really satisfied with the result and also with the fact that we finished the tournament with a victory,” Iran’s head coach Behrouz Ataei said after the match.

Rasoul Aghchehli, captain of Iran, said, “My team and I are so happy to take the fifth place. It was a tough loss on Thursday, because we absolutely wanted to play in the semifinals. Congratulations to all my teammates for closing the championship with a victory.”

“Our last match was not good. We did not play as we should. All the matches at this tournament were hard,” China’s head coach Genyin Ju commented.
